Year in and year out, during the holy month of Ramadaan, various Islamic organizations all around South Africa embark on the cooking of haleem for distribution to the poor, needy, the destitute and also all those who enjoy this deg cooked broth during Ramadaan.
In Lenasia various organizations have been involved in the distribution of haleem and for many years now the Saaberie Chishty Society have embarked on the Haleem distribution project in Lenasia which has proved to be very successful.
The project is headed by Shabeer Sayed who has been instrumental in coordinating the Haleem Distribution project said that “the distribution of haleem is an age old tradition, not only here in South Africa, but all over the world. We at Saaberie Chishty Society have recognized the need for such a project in Ramadaan and have noticed over the past years the demand for the distribution of haleem to various areas in Lenasia has increased tremendously and as such we have also increased the number of degs cooked from the previous years”.
This weekend, our resident cook, Khalil and his crew, who has been preparing haleem for us for many years, prepared 30 degs of haleem which has been distributed in Lenasia, Lenasia South, Orange Farm and Poortjie with the Saaberie Chishty Hall being the centre where the cooking of the haleem takes place” added Shabeer.
The Younus family has once again obliged in the distribution of haleem in the Lenasia South area from their residence in the corner of Sheffield and Wellington Streets, Extension 4 opposite Mr Brick.
The distribution goes on every Sundays until the last Sunday of Ramadaan and Mr. Shabeer Sayed urges those who wish to donate towards this worthy cause can do so by contacting the offices of Saaberie Chishty on 011 854 4618 or contact him directly on 082 269 1120
